Local leagues must get better – Schäfer

Image

National senior men’s team coach Winfried Schäfer has lamented the poor standard of football in Jamaica’s local leagues, indicating poor conditions of pitches across the island and sparse communication between club and country to be two of the major factors.

“Everybody knows our fields in the league are a catastrophe,” Schäfer told members of the media at the Jamaica Football Federation headquarters on Tuesday.

“I don’t know one ground in the league where you can play one-touch, two-touch football; every time you must stop the ball because it goes here and there like a billiard. We cannot change this by ourselves, we need help from outside? maybe our sponsors.”

The German coach, who took over following the dismissal of former Reggae Boy Theodore Whitmore, during Jamaica’s failed bid to qualify for this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil, believes the country must begin from scratch in analysing where the programme failed, with an improvement in the overall standard of the local league as a major factor to be considered. Schäfer pointed to the comparatively strong leagues in the United States, Mexico and Honduras as reasons they were able to separate themselves during the qualifiers and eventually book a spot at the World Cup.

“Jamaica’s football has fallen into the second tier here in CONCACAF,” Schäfer said, pointing to not only the club’s elimination from the qualifiers, but also the recent failure to reach the CONCACAF Gold Cup after a dismal performance in the most recent edition of the Caribbean Cup.

“At the moment, we have a big problem. I have seen many matches in the league and it will not be easy,” Schäfer said.

“The national team is a mirror of the league. When you see the league in Germany it’s fantastic, and our team is number two in the world. In Spain, the league is fantastic, with lots of players coming from the youth (teams) in Barcelona. Spain is number one, the French the same.

“The question is, how can we make our league better to make our national team better; when you have good players in the league our national team is better. Our coaches in the league are responsible for our local players. We must help these coaches; meet with the clubs, coaches and chairmen, find out what are their problems, find out what we can do.”

Shortwood fall to Allman/Woodford as UWI surge in KSAFA Super League

SHORTWOOD FC suffered a shock defeat after falling to former basement team Allman-Woodford FC 3-1 at the Bell Chung Oval, while UWI remained unbeaten to move three points clear at the top of Zone B in the KSAFA Super League.

Shortwood entered the fourth round tied on seven points with UWI, who led with a superior goal difference. The loss was their first of the season and UWI capitalised on Shortwood’s defeat by claiming their third win of the season in a 2-0 victory away to Greenwich Town FC, courtesy of goals from Mark McKoy and Richard Crooks. UWI now lead with 10 points ahead of Shortwood on seven.

In the other Zone B encounter, Mountain View got past Real Mona 1-0 to claim their second victory from four outings. With the win Mountain View climbed above Real Mona (four points), into third place on six points. Allman-Woodford moved up to fifth place with four points following their first victory of the season, with Greenwich occupying last place on three points to round out Zone B.

In Zone A action, Police National were thrashed 4-0 by Santos. Maxfield Park squeezed out a 1-0 victory over Rae Town at Breezy Castle with Brown’s Town and Barbican playing out a 0-0 draw at the Barbican field.

The results mean that Brown’s Town remain unbeaten to lead the Zone with eight points, one more than Maxfield Park in second. Rae Town are in third, followed by Barbican, who are in fourth on goals scored. Santos’ victory lifted them off the foot of the table into fifth spot on four points with Police National being pushed a spot down into last on a meagre two points, and having conceded 11 goals from just four games.

All aboard! Schäefer believes nationalistic approach will grow Ja’s football

SCHÄEFER… I think all coaches and businesses need to co-operate

NATIONAL head coach Winifried Schäefer said cooperation among all stakeholders will be crucial to the success of Jamaica’s overall football product, pointing to a more nationalistic approach.

The German noted that the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) coaches, administrators, sponsors and other partners must sit together to chart a course that will ultimately end in the upliftment of Jamaica’s football landscape.

“I think all coaches and businesses need to cooperate. We need to talk together (to see) what can we do to have better football in Jamaica,” he said, as he addressed the Jamaica Observer Sports Club at the tabloid’s headquarters recently.

Schäefer stressed the importance of sponsorship, and such is his eagerness to get the ball rolling in that area, that he has sought help in his native country.

“I want to bring Jamaican football (to the top) but we need money… we need sponsors.

“I have been talking to some people back in Germany, but we need (to start) from Jamaica, we need to change the way we play football and then we might see many sponsors.

If our football go up, then the support will go up,” said the experienced tactician. Schäefer, who has agreed in principle to a new fouryear arrangement as head coach of the senior programme, argued that critical to the process, as well, will be the roles of local leagues and coaches.

“I want help for Jamaican football. For four months I thought we needed a meeting with all clubs, with all coaches and I want to tell the coaches that when you build a good national team, it all goes back to the clubs.

The coaches and the clubs make national players, not the (national) coach,” Schäefer said.

Another idea of his is to have a forum where most, if not all, coaches sit with him and talk about players. Schäefer, who led Cameroon to the African Cup of Nations title back in 2002, outlined that despite the drawbacks, he believes football has grown in Jamaica. “The base is in the youth.

Our youth talent is the future in Jamaica. Jamaica is a very proud and beautiful country, but for football we need more — better fields, more training, the best coaches, then we can go forward,” he ended.
