Goalkeeper Campbell Rescues Point For Barbican

BarbicanRenoE20140528IA

Barbican moved to within a point of ninth-placed Reno and increased their lead to two over 11th-placed Humble Lion when they played to a 0-0 draw with fifth-placed Cavalier on Monday night, and they have Nicholas Campbell to thank.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper dove well to his left to save a first-half penalty from forward Claudious Blackburn to deny the more fancied Cavalier a win. Blackburn’s miss was Cavalier’s best opportunity even though utility player Girvon Brown had a hat-trick of misses.

While Barbican were happy for the point, hero, Campbell, a newcomer to the Premier League having earned promotion with Barbican, said saving penalties is commonplace for him.

nothing new

“It was a good penalty save, but it is a regular for me. This is nothing new. It was a penalty shootout that we used to get to this level. I saved penalties to get us here,” said the player, who has been with Barbican for four years.

“It is a great joy still, as long as those who are behind us are still behind us, we are happy,” he continued.

Speaking with a great deal of confidence, Campbell made it clear that Barbican belonged in the Premier League and that they will remain.

“These teams are not better than us. It is just for us to gel right, communicate right and play better and we will be getting more three points from games. We will show our class,” the six-footer said.

Campbell’s route to top-flight football is different from most players in the league. Unlike them, he did not play high-school football, so he developed under the radar.

“I went to St Joseph’s High School, a private school, so I did not play high-school football. I became a goalkeeper when I was at Phoenix at about 16 years of age when Craig Butler put me in the goal because I was tall, and I have never come out of it.

“My goalkeeping talent is mainly raw. People have helped me, but it is not enough for a goalkeeper. I have not had much formal coaching, but I am confident in myself,” the man who grew up in Standpipe said.

Having fulfilled one dream in playing in the Premier League, Campbell is aiming at another.

“I have never played for a national team before, but my dream is to be there any moment now. Mr (Miguel) Coley has told me to keep pushing and pushing harder, and I am doing that, and I know that one day, I will be there,” he said confidently.

Top Clubs Battle For Jackie Bell KO Last Four Spots

TivoliArnettD20141214IA renovsboystownC20141026GT

Four of the island’s top football clubs will be engaged in the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA)/Jackie Bell knockout competition quarter-final stage today in a double-header at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

In the first game, Tivoli Gardens tackle Harbour View, starting at 6 p.m., to be followed by a clash of neighbouring clubs, Boys’ Town and Arnett Gardens, at 8 p.m.

All four clubs are involved in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) and that should make the games very competitive.

In the feature, Arnett Gardens are favoured to win against a Boys’ Town team that is struggling in the Red Stripe Premier League. However, when it comes to a knockout game, the team that wants it more usually wins.

Arnett are on a roll in the premier league, coming off a fourth consecutive win last Sunday, and coach Jerome ‘Jerry’ Waite said his team will not be taking their foot off the pedal.

Record wins

“Well, first and foremost, we have won the competition a record six times, so we will put all in the game against Boys’ Town tomorrow,” Waite toldThe Gleaner.

“We can’t underestimate Boys’ Town, despite their woes in the premier league, as this is a competition that they can win,” he added.

Arnett will look to the rejuvenated striker, Leon Strickland, former Boys’ Town player Oneil ‘Bigga’ Thompson, Dicoy Williams, Jason Moore, and André Clennon for victory.

Meanwhile, Boys’ Town’s long-serving coach, Andrew Price, hopes that his team can put away their chances and also defend well against Arnett.

“It should be a tough game. We’ve played them twice this season, won once and lost the other game, in different competitions,” Price said.

“The match-up should be an interesting one. We have to prevent Arnett from scoring, as well as put away our chances. And, if we do these things, we should advance to the semi-finals,” he reasoned.

Boys’ Town will be hoping that players such as captain Michael Campbell, Rafiek Thomas, André Dawson, and Peter Keyes find their best form in today’s match.

In the opening game, a close encounter is also expected. Harbour View edged Tivoli 1-0 in a RSPL encounter a week ago and will be hunting another victory.

However, Tivoli, coming off two consecutive defeats in the premier league, will look to get back on the winning trail.

The KSAFA/Jackie Bell 2014/15 winners will collect the trophy and $400,000, while the beaten finalists will get $250,000. The third-place team is guaranteed $150,000 and fourth, $100,000.

Today’s games

Tivoli Gardens vs Harbour View at 6 p.m.

Boys’ Town vs Arnett Gardens at 8 p.m.

Tomorrow’s games

Barbican vs Rockfort at 6 p.m.

Cavalier vs Waterhouse at 8 p.m.

(Both games at Waterhouse Stadium).

Home Boys Getting Job Done At Bull Bay in KSAFA Super League

Promoted Bull Bay edged last year’s beaten finalists Mountain View 1-0 to record their second straight victory in Zone B of the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA)/Jamaica National Super League.

Donovan McCurdy scored the lone goal for the Paul Hibbert-coached Bull Bay in the 86th minute. However, Bull Bay played most of the game with 10 players after their captain, Bevil Grossett, was issued a straight red card in the 15th minute.

Bull Bay defeated August Town 2-1 in the opening game.

Seeking third win

The East Kingston-based team will go in search of its third win of the season, when it takes on Rae Town on Saturday at Bull Pen.

Despite being confident, Hibbert expects a tough game.

“Rae Town are seasoned in the Super League and so they won’t be easy to beat,” Hibbert said. “However, it is a home game for us and we will try our best to defend our home turf.”

The coach also expressed satisfaction with his youthful team’s success over Mountain View.

“I am pleased with the victory because we are playing very good football with a relatively young team.

“However, I am not surprised with how we have been playing because we are one of the few teams in the competition that is using pure local-based players from Bull Bay,” Hibbert pointed out.

In the zone’s other games on Saturday, Rockfort defeated Rae Town 3-0 and Brown’s Town edged Santos 1-0.

In Zone A, University of the West Indies beat Real Mona 1-0, August Town stopped Shortwood 1-0 and Maxfield Park and Allman/Woodford played to a 1-1 draw.

In Zone B Major League action, New Kingston whipped Central Kingston 3-1, Cooreville Gardens defeated Stony Hill 2-0, Duhaney Park got by Pembroke Hall 2-0 and Olympic Gardens and Greenwich Town played to 0-0 draw.

In Zone A, Maverley Hughen-den edged Constant Spring 2-1 and Molynes United and Meadforest played to a 1-1 draw.
