KSAFA launches grassroots programme at Duhaney Park at the weekend

The Kingston and St Andrew Football Association, in collaboration with Jamaica Beverages Limited through its brand, Chubby, sports cable provider SportsMax and Continental Baking Company Limited, staged the first of their Grassroots Football Programme on the weekend.

Fifty children between the ages of six and 12 years old participated in the event, which got under way at 10 in the morning at the Duhaney Park football field. It was the first of 24 events slated to be conducted across the KSAFA Confederation, over the next nine months.

50 participants

Opening the programme, Peter Higgins, the KSAFA general secretary, thanked the sponsors for partnering to make the programme a reality. In direct address to the children, Higgins encouraged them to enjoy themselves.

Among the 50 participants at this event were eight girls. Jacqueline Cowan, second vice-president KSAFA, was especially pleased that girls were in attendance. Two of the girls – six-years-old Amari Hewitt and 11-year-old Assana Najair ≠- had different reasons for attending. For Amari, her teacher at the Duhaney Park Primary encouraged her to attend and she was glad she did because she was enjoying herself. Eleven-year-old Assana revealed “I came here to learn so that when I come of age, if given another chance, I will be able to be a successful football player.”

Bakery adds spice to KSAFA grassroots programme

Image

CONTINENTAL Baking Company Limited, owners of National Bakery, will be partnering with the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) as an associate sponsor to host the Chubby/KSAFA Grassroots Football Programme for children, scheduled for April 12, in Duhaney Park.

Tiffany Wong, trainee manager of Continental Baking Company, said that coming on board was an easy decision for her company.

“Continental Baking Company, owners of the National brand, is proud to support this kids’ football programme, and we at National share the mantra that the more children play the more they learn.

“National is committed to enhancing the lives of our future leaders through learning and play. This is evidenced by our participation in other youth social programmes such as Crayons Count, Talk up Yout and the Jamaica Observer’s Junior Writers’ Club,” she said as she addressed a press briefing at the JFF offices on Tuesday.

Wong also said that her company has received strong support from consumers in general over the years and that this football event for children is a good way to give back to communities.

“This programme is about getting everyone together and our commitment to this kids’ football programme is to provide each child participating with our National snacks.

“At National, we take pride in our products and in delivering quality into our Jamaican communities in an effort to continue to build Brand Jamaica. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those of you who continue to support us by purchasing National products, as it is this support which allows us to be able to give back to programmes such as this,” she said.

KSAFA Grassroots Football Programme gets $2.49-million Chubby boost

THE first annual joint Chubby/Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Grassroots Football Programme for children has received a boost of $2.49 million from its main sponsor, it was announced at a press conference at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) headquarters yesterday.

The programme, which is an extensive series of Grassroots Football Festival across Jamaica for boys and girls between the ages of six and 12 years old, will kick off this Saturday at Duhaney Park.

Xesus Johnston, general manager for Jamaica Beverages Limited, said that he was pleased to announce his company’s commitment to youth development, particularly through sports in Jamaica.

“It is a pleasure to be here and I am pleased to announce that Jamaica Beverages Limited, through its Chubby brand, will be the main sponsor for this wonderful event.

“The sponsorship agreement with KSAFA has deepened our already entrenched relationship with communities across Jamaica. We are very excited at the opportunities that lie ahead for these young boys and girls coming out of this initiative, a result of the high level of structure and professionalism that KSAFA will bring to the programme,” Johnston said.

Meanwhile, KSAFA’s president Rudolph Speid thanked Chubby for supporting the building of the youth and communities.

“I am very pleased with Jamaica Beverages and this initiative that we have embarked on. Having trained and worked with top adult footballers across Jamaica who have gone on to play at national and international levels, KSAFA is very excited about the future of football in Jamaica.

“Grassroots initiatives are a great way to truly invest in and touch our young people in their communities and these are the children that would not necessarily have the chance to join a formal football club at school or otherwise,” the president noted.

Acting director for youth policy and programme development at the Ministry of Youth and Culture, Andrene Blackwin, representing the minister of youth and culture, Lisa Hanna, said that she was pleased to be a part of this event, which is building a future for the youth.

“Events like these bring communities and people together and so I am happy to be associated with this programme. Through sports we can build a future for our children, teach them discipline and care for them and I think that this is good on a whole towards their development,” she noted.

Other sponsors for the event are SportsMax and Continental Baking Company Limited.
